I wanted to make the back-tentacles as one piece moulds so there are no seam lines, so I made the originals out of stuff that is flexible enough to remove from a mould in one piece rather than solid clay.

   

   

   

The mould was then made out of plaster in one piece. I’d coated the sculpt pictured above with several coats of latex which helped me pull it out in one go:

   

Once the mould had dried out it was filled with latex. The plaster mould absorbs moisture from the latex so after 2-3 hours there is a skin on the inside of the mould. After pouring the rest out it can be left to dry overnight leaving a hollow latex piece:

 

The tentacles are then filled with expanding foam to keep them rigid:

   

I added some extra aluminium wire to the torso to hold the tentacles up, the entire thing is full of wire anyway so it’s quite rigid as it is:
